Are you taking care of your body and digestive tra Are you taking care of your body and digestive tract? The sad truth is that many people take better care of their car than they do of their bodies. I used to be like that too before I got diagnosed with autoimmune disease, although I didn’t actually have a car…but if I did I probably would have :)
People often say they are healthy but when questioned they actually have many symptoms like bloating, fatigue, acne, headaches, joint pain, hair loss, sinus congestion, brain fog, eczema, severe PMS etc. Symptoms often regarded as ’normal’ or “it’s just stress”.

Autoimmune disease can take a very long time to develop and you often have antibodies to your organs way before you have gone as far as having diagnosable disease. Paying attention to your symptoms is important and with early detection you have a change to change your ways BEFORE you are diagnosed with an incurable disease.

Do get in touch if you would like help with dietary advice and diagnostic testing to find the underlying causes of your symptoms. When I was first diagnosed, in 2009, I decided not When I was first diagnosed, in 2009, I decided not to let it change my life . I took the drugs I was given and just continued with my life as before. I definitely didn’t have a very healthy diet and I can’t say I enjoyed cooking.
When I got pregnant with my first son in 2010 I stopped the drugs and my autoimmunity went into remission (something that can happen in pregnancy). A couple of years later, the pain came back with a vengeance and only because I couldn’t get a quick appointment with a rheumatologist (to get more drugs) I started reading up about other ways to ease the pain and found the paleo diet and low starch diet for AS.

The relief I experienced from this felt like a miracle and made me obsessed about nutrition and the Functional Medicine way to deal with autoimmune disease. 6 months later I was enrolled in a 3 year long Nutritional Therapy course at ION. I wanted to shout it from the roof tops, that diet does indeed matter!

AS made me change my career path so that I could help other women also struggling with debilitating autoimmune symptoms. Something that feels incredibly meaningful to me. It also made me learn to cook, something I quite enjoy doing today. And now that I have 3 kids, healthy nutrition is even more important.
I offer free discovery calls and would love to talk to you if you are interested in making a change and getting to the root of your condition. It’s world arthritis day, a day to raise awarene It’s world arthritis day, a day to raise awareness of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. This is of course warm to my heart as someone with the diagnosis- Ankylosing Spondylitis which is an autoimmune form of arthritis.

To manage the symptoms, anti-inflammatories, steroids and immunosuppressant drugs are offered but these can of course come with unpleasant side effects like stomach irritation and a leaky gut, which is one of the factors needed for autoimmune disease to happen in the first place. Leaky gut is not a condition on its own, it’s a symptom of the root causes of illness which can include antibiotic use, stress, food intolerances and sensitivities, gut infections and an imbalanced gut microbiome.

Why do I suddenly post about fashion? Well, you gu Why do I suddenly post about fashion?
Well, you guys may have noticed I like colourful things :) I used to be a photographer and this is a from a shoot with the lovely and inspiring artist @suekreitzman and this is her motto. It translates pretty well to food too and is something I often preach about - eating a rainbow of colours every day. My own diet definitely used to be on the beige side but having been diagnosed with autoimmune disease I eventually started learning about nutrition, realising what an enormous effect diet can have on your disease progression and if your diet stays beige, so do you. Different coloured vegetables contain different phytonutrients which all have different beneficial effects on our bodies. A big variety of plant fibre is also important for our gut microbiomes.

This is a piece of the puzzle often forgotten abou This is a piece of the puzzle often forgotten about or ignored. Even by myself. I had a couple of root canals done around 6 or 7 years ago, before I understood their potential problems. Only this year did I get a proper cone beam scan done of my teeth, revealing inflammation, adding to the total inflammatory load in my body.

Oral bacteria spreading through the body have been associated with a number of systemic diseases.
Autoimmune disease as well as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and dementia are all directly connected to poor oral health. When working on improving ones gut health, it’s important to consider dental health because of its downstream effect. Oral bacteria can translocate to the gut and change its microbiota and immune defense, so a ‘leaky gum’ can cause a ‘leaky gut’.

Also, unrelated to the gut,
A gingivitis infection (gum disease) can, in some people, turn on a process called citrullination. The bacteria changes the protein structure of arginine in the body’s tissue, converting it to citrulline.

This new protein is foreign to the body and can therefore trigger an antibody response to it - a process found to express in joint cartilage and can be one of the mechanisms for Rheumatoid Arthritis. Then there is the issue with Mercury which is a incredibly toxic, but more about that another day. #autoimmune #autoimmunedisease #chronicillness #chronicpain #dentalhealth #dentalcare #oralcare #oralhealth #nutritionaltherapy #glutenfree #paleo #functionalmedicine #guthealth #healthissues #healing #rootcause #hashimoto #ankylosingspondylitis #rheumatoidarthritis #ms #multiplesclerosis #leakygut #chronicfatigue #fatigue
