Autoimmunity doesn’t just randomly turn on one d Autoimmunity doesn’t just randomly turn on one day. We know that autoimmunity can be initiated 10-20 years before you start experiencing symptoms. Your body tries to compensate as long as it can to function as well as possible, but when that is not possible anymore, you start to experience symptoms.

1️⃣ The first stage is silent. The autoimmune process has started and you have antibodies against your own tissue but you don’t have any symptoms yet.

2️⃣ In the second stage you have antibodies and symptoms but no diagnosis.

3️⃣ The 3rd stage is diagnosable disease with tissue destruction. 🔸With antibody testing, like the Cyrex Array 5, we can measure predictive autoantibodies to multiple organs in the body and prevent further tissue destruction. I wish that was something that was included in general health checks, and that people were taught about the ways to prevent full blown autoimmune disease. Maybe one day…. If you are interested in Cyrex testing or Nutritional advice please get in touch.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is an autoimmune conditi Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition that affects thyroid function. As with all autoimmune diseases, the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues and in this case, the thyroid, causing inflammation or thyroiditis.

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland situated in the neck. If it isn’t functioning optimally you may have symptoms of fatigue, weight gain (even though your are working out and eating well), depression, hair loss, feeling cold, memory problems, constipation, dry skin, loss of the outer bit of your eyebrows, infertility? If you are suffering with these symptoms, having your thyroid tested is a good idea, but you need to ask for the right tests.

If you go to your doctor they might test your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to see if it is elevated - a sign of hypothyroidism. If it’s within range you may be told you are fine and sent on your way. The problem with this is that you can have antibodies to your thyroid long before your TSH goes out of range. Also, TSH fluctuates which means it could be low at the time of the test.

90% of hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimoto’s but in conventional medicine it is treated the same as non-autoimmune hypothyroidism and therefore isn’t tested for which is why people often continue to struggle even when they have been put on medication. The autoimmune attack is still there and if it goes unmanaged, the risk for developing other autoimmune conditions is increased.

A full thyroid panel includes TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, TPO antibodies and TG antibodies. If the antibodies are above the reference range it means you have an autoimmune reaction to your thyroid and whilst medication may be needed in cases, to stabilise the TSH, turning down the autoimmune inflammation is what you need to focus on.

In the next week I’ll be going over common triggers and what you can do to turn down the autoimmune attack.

When being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease th When being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease there may be mixed feelings. You may have waited for years for a diagnosis so in a way you feel happy that you finally have one and after years of not being able to explain to people why you feel so bad, your collection of symptoms now have a name. Getting a diagnosis can also make you feel powerless, hopeless and confused. What do you do now? You have an incurable disease that makes you feel miserable. And the thought of taking strong immunosuppressant drugs may feel scary.

The good thing about having a diagnosis is it enables you to research and educate yourself about your condition. It tells us which part of your body is under attack and helps us understand what your disease progression might look like. The root cause and driving factors will still be different for everyone and with some detective work it is possible to find those factors so that you can remove or reduce those whilst supporting your body in the best possible way to reduce systemic inflammation and start feeling better. You have the power.

Think of it like this:
“I‘m expressing a condition known as (...insert given diagnosis…), and that which is expressed can be silenced. If the conditions in my life change, so will my condition.”
(Robert Luby - IFM)

Gut health has a HUGE impact on your immune system Gut health has a HUGE impact on your immune system and overall health which is why i talk about it ALL the time. If you have an autoimmune disease there is a very big chance you also have gut dysbiosis - an imbalance in your gut microbiome. Intestinal permeability ‘leaky gut’ is also one of the 3 factors for autoimmunity to occur.

There is a lot you can do to help rebuild a healthy gut and thereby experience better health. What you eat programs your body with messages of e What you eat programs your body with messages of either good or ill health. It regulates your gene expression, immune system, microbiome, hormones and brain chemistry.

When I say ‘Eat a rainbow’ I definitely don’t mean these colourful worms. That message they send is confusing. In fact, when food colourings bonds with human tissue, this tissue becomes foreign to the body which may lead to an immune attack and the development of autoimmunity.

We know that having the gene for a certain autoimmune disease, does not mean we will for sure develop that disease. For example; the gene HLA-B27, which predisposed me to developing Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), is present in about 90% of people with AS. However, only 5% of people with this gene go on to develop AS. I did, but my brother did not so it’s not just genes but other epigenetic factors ie. diet & lifestyle, that contribute to the development of disease.

Of course I am scared that my son’s go on to develop AS, but by knowing how big a role diet and lifestyle plays in this, I can support them and their gut health as good as I can to prevent this from happening. That’s empowering.

Conventional medicine seeks to treat the symptoms Conventional medicine seeks to treat the symptoms of chronic illness, not resolve the underlying cause. When I first got diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis I took the anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) for a few years on and off and they worked ok for a while, until they didn’t. I was booked in to talk to my doctor about trying Humira, an immunosuppressant drug, but as I was researching it and waiting for my appointment I also started researching other ways of dealing with the pain. That’s when I came across Terry Wahls Ted talk ‘Minding Your Mitochondria’ and discovered Functional Medicine.

Functional medicine is a science-based approach that looks at the function of all of the body’s systems and how they interact with one another rather than naming a disease and giving a pill.

Conventional medicine is amazing for acute care but it doesn’t work as well for chronic illness because it doesn’t recognise the common root causes of these conditions - intestinal permeability (leaky gut), bacterial & yeast overgrowths, SIBO etc. Functional medicine does, it understands that the true problem lies with your immune system and not the particular organs under attack.

While genetics do play a part, environment, diet, and lifestyle counts for 70-75% of the root cause of chronic illness. Now that’s empowering! These are factors that you have the ability to address to quiet down your symptoms and feel so much better.
