Today is my twins 4th birthdays ❤️After having Today is my twins 4th birthdays ❤️After having 5 early miscarriages I never thought I would actually have a second child. But the moment we gave up the thought, sold many of the baby things we had held on to and paid a deposit on a puppy, BOOM, I got pregnant, and it wasn’t just one but 2 beating hearts in there. Somehow, this time around, they also stayed alive and were born naturally in week 36. I was booked to induce labor at the hospital and I don’t know if it was because of the litres of raspberry leaf tea I had been downing (in hope to avoid induction) but somehow it just started naturally the evening before my appointment. I came into hospital the next morning at 10, the time for the induction, but contractions got really strong and at 10.33 the first tiny, skinny boy popped out and 13 minutes later, his brother. I’m still amazed how everything just worked out. It hasn’t been an easy 4 years with twins, I’m not gonna lie, but the toddler years are behind us and the future is bright :) I feel incredibly lucky to have them in my life. ❤️

The other day I talked about potential dietary tri The other day I talked about potential dietary triggers for Hashimoto’s and today I wanted to mention other factors that can be involved in triggering an autoimmune response.
When I see someone with autoimmune disease, I always test for pathogens and I always have chemical exposure in mind. We all have our own unique autoimmune pattern with different triggers and root causes, like a web of dietary, lifestyle, pathogens and chemical factors that we need to untangle to find that place where flare-ups are rare.

What triggers one person with Hashimoto’s may no What triggers one person with Hashimoto’s may not trigger the next but these are common triggers to be aware of:

Gluten is one of the biggest factors to address when it comes to autoimmunity and studies show that a gluten-free diet can improve hypothyroid symptoms significantly. Some people even go into remission on a gluten-free diet.

Dairy (casein) and grains often cross-react with gluten which is why I recommend excluding these foods too, at least in the first stages of addressing your autoimmunity.

Iodine is often promoted as a way of supporting hypothyroidism but numerous studies actually show that Iodine can trigger the production of antibodies against the thyroid and a low-iodine diet can therefore be beneficial if you have Hashimoto’s.

Lectins is a sticky glycoprotein found in seeds, nuts, and nightshades. It which has been shown to cross-react with TPO in thyroid tissueso if you have a reaction to lectins, your immune system can also attack your thyroid tissue.

Salt - Studies have also showed that high sodium intake can trigger an autoimmune response in some people. Taking potassium when you eat something salty may help mitigate this effect. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is an autoimmune conditi Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition that affects thyroid function. As with all autoimmune diseases, the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues and in this case, the thyroid, causing inflammation or thyroiditis.

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland situated in the neck. If it isn’t functioning optimally you may have symptoms of fatigue, weight gain (even though your are working out and eating well), depression, hair loss, feeling cold, memory problems, constipation, dry skin, loss of the outer bit of your eyebrows, infertility? If you are suffering with these symptoms, having your thyroid tested is a good idea, but you need to ask for the right tests.

If you go to your doctor they might test your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to see if it is elevated - a sign of hypothyroidism. If it’s within range you may be told you are fine and sent on your way. The problem with this is that you can have antibodies to your thyroid long before your TSH goes out of range. Also, TSH fluctuates which means it could be low at the time of the test.

90% of hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimoto’s but in conventional medicine it is treated the same as non-autoimmune hypothyroidism and therefore isn’t tested for which is why people often continue to struggle even when they have been put on medication. The autoimmune attack is still there and if it goes unmanaged, the risk for developing other autoimmune conditions is increased.

A full thyroid panel includes TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, TPO antibodies and TG antibodies. If the antibodies are above the reference range it means you have an autoimmune reaction to your thyroid and whilst medication may be needed in cases, to stabilise the TSH, turning down the autoimmune inflammation is what you need to focus on.

In the next week I’ll be going over common triggers and what you can do to turn down the autoimmune attack.

Intestinal hyper-permeability, or ‘leaky gut’ Intestinal hyper-permeability, or ‘leaky gut’ as it is commonly called, is one of the factors that underlie autoimmune disease and it’s one of those things that people often read about online and think ‘if I just heal my gut, my autoimmune symptoms will get better’.

Unfortunately it’s not that simple because ‘leaky gut’ is a symptom of an underlying problem so to heal it, you need to find the root cause of why it is leaky.

Supplements like L-glutamine, DGL, zinc carnosine etc. can be very helpful, but if the underlying problem is still there, you won’t get very far with supplements.

Many things can cause a leaky gut. Gut infections such as candida, SIBO etc., gluten and other food sensitivities, medications, stress, PPI’s, antibiotics, traumatic brain injury (brain/gut axis).

Good digestion is crucial because when undigested food proteins leak out into your bloodstream, they are viewed by the immune system as foreign bodies, causing an immune system reaction and inflammation.
