The Whitney Museum of American Art is a modern art museum located in Manhattan. Simply called the “Whitney”, it houses more than 21,000 works by nearly 3,000 20th and 21st century artists. Opened in 1931 , it was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875-1942), an artist and patron of the arts.
